TUCUMCARI, N.M. – With the addition of nurse practitioner Rhonda James, clinicians now serve patients Monday through Friday at both the Dr. Dan C. Trigg Memorial Hospital (DCT) and Logan clinics.
James, who began seeing patients in October, has a particular interest in caring for patients in small communities. She joins Drs. Hailey Wallace and Darrell Willis, as well as nurse practitioner Laura Cunningham, at the DCT clinic. La Juana Dell Willis sees patients at the Logan clinic.
"I like working in a small community," James said. "I believe it is a calling to serve the underserved."
James works at the Logan clinic on Monday and Friday and the DCT clinic on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. As a newcomer to Quay County, James said she appreciates the many local opportunities for community involvement. She volunteers at Paws and Claws Animal Rescue of Quay County and the Quay County Health Council, enjoys walking with husband Larry James at Five Mile Park, and looks forward to kayaking and fishing this summer. Her daughter, Alyssa Kirsch, is completing her senior year in high school and plans to attend Eastern New Mexico University next year. Two other daughters live in Oklahoma and Texas.
James earned both her bachelor's and master's degree in nursing from Kaplan University. Before becoming a nurse practitioner, she worked as a registered nurse for 18 years in several patient care areas, including emergency, medical/surgical, critical care, post-partum and pediatric care. Before coming to Tucumcari, she worked at Stilwell Memorial Hospital in northeastern Oklahoma.
James said she appreciates the range of experience among practitioners at the two clinics, as well as their familiarity with local resources for patients.
"This team is friendly and easy-going, and extremely dedicated to their patients," she said.
"Rhonda James brings a great deal of experience to her role and has really gotten to know our community," said Dr. Darrell Willis, medical director, DCT. "We are thrilled that hiring an additional nurse practitioner on this team means we can care for more patients in Logan and Tucumcari."
