Post-Graduate Year One Pharmacy Residency

The ASHP-accredited Post-Graduate Year One Pharmacy Residency (PGY1) offered at Presbyterian Hospital in downtown Albuquerque is a flexible program designed to provide residents with unique experiences in both clinical and administrative practice. The overall goal of the PGY1 residency is to prepare residents for clinical practice by developing their technical, critical thinking and communication skills through interdisciplinary rounds and patient profile review, in-service education, precepting pharmacy students, and participation on pharmacy and hospital committees. At the end of the program, residents are well-prepared for a position in hospital pharmacy, board certification, or pursuit of a PGY2 residency program .

Learning Experiences

Learning experiences are typically five weeks long (flexible, depending on resident interests) and include all required rotations and one elective.

July is an orientation month, during which residents rotate through the main pharmacy and the various pharmacist-staffed units.

The practice management rotation provides residents with a variety of administrative experiences, including involvement in the Pharmacy, Therapeutics and Laboratory Committee, the patient safety team, financial meetings, and transplant services.

Our staffing requirements are every other weekend (20 hours), and residents may take off either the Friday before or the Monday after each staffing weekend. Staffing typically begins on the general medicine unit, but can be tailored to residents' interests as the year progresses.

Additional residency experiences include ACLS certification, Code Blue and Stroke Team training, and the teaching certificate program through The University of New Mexico (optional).

  • You must be a graduate of an ACPE-Accredited College of Pharmacy and be eligible for New Mexico pharmacy licensure.

  • An on-site interview with presentation is required.
  • The Presbyterian Pharmacy Residency Program participates in the ASHP Resident Matching Program.

The Post-Graduate Year One Pharmacy Residency (PGY1) conducted by Presbyterian Healthcare Services, Albuquerque, New Mexico, is accredited by ASHP.
