Paramedic and EMT Application Process
All applications will be reviewed for minimum qualifications and all EMT and paramedic applicants are required to take and pass an EMT-Basic or paramedic assessment. Candidates who are offered employment will be required to complete and pass a background check, pre-employment fitness test, drug screening, and occupational medicine testing before starting orientation. Orientation is held four times a year and all employees are required to complete two weeks of classroom orientation, followed by field training.
Out-of-State Paramedic Applicants
All out-of-state paramedic applicants must be eligible to obtain a temporary New Mexico paramedic license. Applicants are required to take and pass a paramedic assessment. If an applicant is selected for hire, the applicant will be required to submit a completed application to the NM EMS Bureau to obtain a temporary New Mexico paramedic license by start date. Candidates who are offered employment will be required to complete and pass a background check, pre-employment fitness test drug screening, and occupational medicine testing before starting orientation.
AAS orientations are held six times a year. All EMTs and paramedics begin in a two week classroom orientation, then team up with a field supervisor to train and work out in the field. After training and orientation, employees are partnered with another EMT or paramedic to work in the field. All new paramedics who clear the orientation period are assigned to a float pool that bids every month by seniority on shifts for the following month. All paramedics will be moved to permanent shifts as quickly as possible, with a maximum time of six months in the float pool.
AAS offers an excellent compensation and benefits package. Relocation bonuses are available for out-of-area paramedics.

Paramedic Scholarship Program
This program is available for current AAS employees who are interested in becoming a paramedic. The AAS employee must have completed the required probationary period, be in good standing and have been accepted into an eligible paramedic program (currently eligible programs for scholarship are the CNM EMS Program or UNM EMSA). During your paramedic training, you will be paid your full-time salary but you will work part-time. Upon successful completion of the paramedic program, NREMT testing, and obtainment of a New Mexico paramedic license, you must agree to work for AAS for three years, or the equivalent of 6,240 hours.
